Baldwin Park police identified James Anthony Teter, a 19-year-old, as the man who barricaded himself in La Blanquita Market forcing an evacuation, said Lt. David Reynoso.
The parolee pleaded guilty last Tuesday to a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.
He is being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic and will be kept under a detention hold from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Reynoso said Teter was spotted acting suspiciously on Dec. 17 by police officers who recognized him as a parolee. When police approached him, he ran and barricaded himself inside La Blanquita.
The market and surrounding businesses were evacuated. After a standoff lasting 30 minutes, the suspect turned himself in.
Police said he did not hold anyone hostage, but they found firearms inside the store.
