Baldwin Park Transportation Center to Break Ground

City officials will mark the official start of the Metrolink center work with a groundbreaking ceremony this Saturday.

Although construction is set to begin the second week of April, the will officially mark the arrival of the transportation hub with a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday.

The project, which will create more than 500 parking spaces for travelers in the area, will cost an initial $8.5 million. Authorities expect it may increase to $9.5 million, depending on additional needs, according to William Galvez, the city's director. The city estimates the center will be completed in one year or less.

City officials have said construction of the transportation center is part of a plan to develop the downtown area and promote public transit.

After several bids were received, the city awarded a contract to PCL Construction Co. of Glendale, which contributed partially to the construction of the Staple Center in downtown Los Angeles, said Galvez.

The Baldwin Park transportation center will be built in the current parking structure adjacent to . The center will have at least five floors, as well as bus stops, a section for bicycles and a pedestrian bridge to connect it with the current station.

"It will be a multimotor facility that will help to get around the civic center and downtown area," Galvez said. "It will be like a terminal where trains and MTA buses, Foothill Transit and local buses will converge," he said.

The project is funded in part by $3.5 million from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Proposition C funding and grants received from the Federal Transit Administration.

Proposition C is a voter-approved measure that provides income to the city through county taxes for projects that reduce motor vehicle congestion.

The official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Those interested in attending should RSVP before the end of business Wednesday by calling 626-813-5201.
