UPDATE: Disney No Longer Seek to "Trademark" Dia De Los Muertos

Disney is preparing a Pixar film based on Dia de los Muertos and have filed applications for Dia De Los Muertos trademarks.

UPDATED 6:00 p.m. Disney has announced it is withdrawing its attempt to trademark the phrase Día de Los Muertos according to the public-radio network Fronteras.

"As we have previously announced, Disney-Pixar is developing an animated feature inspired by the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Disney’s trademark filing was intended to protect any potential title for our film and related activities. It has since been determined that the title of the film will change and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing.”

According to Stitchkingdom.com Disney wants to trademark the name of an old ritual known today as Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. A mexican holiday to honor, pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

"The Walt Disney Company has filed several trademark applications in attempt to secure ‘Dia de Los Muertos’ across multiple areas," reports Stitchkingdom.com.

Latintimes.com  also reports Disney is now working with Pixar on an animated film about the Halloween-like holiday, scheduled for release in 2015.

"Even though the project is officially known (for now) as "The Untitled Pixar Movie about Dia de los Muertos," filing the application might indicate that the movie could actually be called "Día de los Muertos," and they want to play it safe with the name, since it's a popular celebration.", reports Latintimes.com.

Popular "Ask a Mexican" columnist and OC Weekly Editor, Gustavo Arellano, said the move is not "offensive" but its an effort to "peddle a bunch of crap."

"Oh, that silly Disney! In their eternal push to make money off of everything and anything, they're prepping a Pixar film based on Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday that's increasingly becoming popular in the United States for its colorful commemoration of the dead," states Arellano.
