Stop and Think Before You Buy that Bunny for Easter

If you decide you want to get a bunny this Easter, the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control Center ask you to consider rescuing one.

Easter is upon us. For many eager youngsters this means Easter Baskets.

But before you head to the pet store to find a fluffy bunny to the gift basket, staffers at the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control Center ask you to consider the following:

“Thirty rabbits found their way to County of Los Angeles Animal Care Centers in only one week following last Easter, none of them chocolate!” County officials wrote in a news release.  “These real bunnies may look cute in baskets, but like dogs and cats, they require real care and attention.  Some LA County families found this out the hard way last year.”

Marcia Mayeda, Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control is asking families who may be thinking of adopting a bunny to remember the homeless rabbits waiting for in County Animal Care Centers.

“If a family is seriously considering adding a new pet over the holiday, I hope they will come to our animal care centers,” Mayeda said. “If they are not ready for a ten year commitment to care for a living gift, I hope they will consider other fun alternatives, like stuffed animals and chocolate rabbits.”
