Suffering Duct Taped Cat Saved at Baldwin Park Animal Shelter

An abandoned box was found in a lower level parking lot at the animal care center. Inside the box, an animal control officer was shocked to find the cat gasping for air.

A two-year-old, gray cat was found struggling to breathe through red duct tape wrapped around its nose and mouth in the parking lot of the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter.

On Thursday April 18, staff at the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control’s (DACC) Baldwin Park Animal Care Center encountered one of the strangest "and perhaps one of the cruelest incidents," said Evelina Villa, a DACC spokesperson in a statement.

An abandoned box was found in a lower level parking lot at the animal care center.  Inside the box, an animal control officer was shocked to find the cat gasping for air.

The cat, named "Amigo" by the  DACC staff, is doing well at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center.

Fortunately, the medical team was able to remove all of the duct tape from his face and paws. “I can’t imagine why someone would do this to this cat,” said DACC Director, Marcia Mayeda. “Animal cruelty is heart breaking, intolerable, and usually a precursor to human violence,” Mayeda said.

Amigo is recovering from this stressful experience under the care of DACC’s compassionate medical staff.

DACC will look to its caring foster volunteers to help rehabilitate Amigo to a healthy, adoptable state. Once Amigo fully recovers, he will be available for adoption.

Potential adopters may email:  AnimalInfo@animalcare.lacounty.gov if they are interested in adopting.

Authorities remind the public if they like to help prevent animal cruelty, they can do so by contributing to the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation (ACF) at lacountyanimals.org.  The ACF is committed to protecting and enhancing the lives of animals in LA County.
