Bill Bouton, 69, a retired high school biology teacher captured some amazing photographs of a humpback whale rising from the water near San Luis Obispo, while a group of shocked spectators observed a few feet from it.
The former teacher told Today.com that he was actually photographing birds when the whale suddenly appeared. Bouton’s picture of the incident went viral after he posted them on Flickr.
This year, the California coast has been a hotspot for spotting whales, reports the AP. Researchers have credited the large presence of Krill, small crustaceans that are popular form of nourishment among whales, as part of the reason for this pattern.
