LAX Reviews Safety Protocol in Light of Asiana Crash

By City News Service

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Airport officials "will certainly review'' safety procedures at LAX and other local airports in light of confirmation today that a teenage girl who survived the July 6 crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport was fatally struck by a fire truck sent to the scene.

Local airport officials had already initiated safety-related conversations with partner agencies in the aftermath of the San Francisco crash, said Los Angeles World Airports spokeswoman Nancy Castles.

Castles said local airport officials "will certainly review or identify any lessons learned that could be incorporated into our response plans.''

San Mateo County Coroner Robert J. Foucrault said today that Ye Mengyuan, 16, died as a result of "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle.''

She was alive when she suffered those injuries, Foucrault said. San Francisco police said Ye was covered in fire retardant foam when she was struck by the fire truck.

The teen's death was among three fatalities associated with the Asiana crash. She had planned to attend a San Fernando Valley summer church camp.

"Constant'' and "ongoing'' reviews of emergency procedures at LAWA- operated airports include emergency drills, conversations with partner safety agencies, such as police and fire departments and the Federal Aviation Administration, Castles said.
