Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina is encouraging residents countywide to participate in the 11th Annual Cesar Chavez Community Service Week by volunteering at public libraries, local food banks and regional homeless shelters.

César Chávez Day is observed in the United States on March 31 each year. It is a local and state holiday for California, intended to promote service to the community in honor of the labor leader, and civil rights activist's life and work.

Cesar Chavez Week this year takes place from March 26 through March 30.

"Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to improving the conditions of workers who harvest the food which feeds our nation. He co-founded the United Farm Workers, an organization that mobilizes thousands of people into political action," said Molina.

"I can't think of no more fitting way to honor Cesar Chavez here in Los Angeles County than by dedicating a week of service in the community in his name," she said.

Those interested in volunteering for food banks can assist with different activities scheduled Monday though Friday at 1734 E. 41st. St. in Los Angeles. Different shifts will be available to pack bags, sort food and complete other tasks. Volunteers can call 213-974-1182 for more information.

Volunteering for public libraries will include activities such as assisting with homework, reading stories, sorting and cleaning books, and craft preparation.

Libraries in West Covina, Montebello, Artesia, Lakewood, Arcadia, Culver City, East Los Angeles, Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights, Artesia, Lennox and Lawndale will participate in this program. For more information, go to www.colapublib.org.

Local animal shelters are also seeking volunteers. Their locations are found at animalcare.lacounty.gov.
