BALDWIN PARK – The Sierra Vista Don picked up its first win
of the season as it outlasted the visiting Mountain View Vikings 42-28 Friday
night in a non-league matchup.
The Dons did just that, running the ball at will Friday night behind Lee Jones’ 258 yards on 26 carries and four touchdowns. Sergio Gonzalez added 57 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. Sierra Vista collectively amassed 338 yards on the ground.
Sierra Vista drew first blood, scoring on its very first drive. Gonzalez finished off the five-play, 38-yard drive with a 23 yard scoring run to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Dons would threaten again but would fumble the ball away at its own 27-yard line. Mountain View quickly capitalized on the opportunity, scoring from a yard out to tie the score 7-7 in the early seconds of the second quarter.
Mountain View was led by Jose Zamora, who ran for 107 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns. Jose Moreno added 51 yards on nine carries.
Jones scored on successive possessions on runs of 70 and 75 yards to give the Dons a 27-14 lead into halftime.
Both teams scored twice In the second half, but the outcome has already been decided.
Moreno closed the gap with a 14-yard run with less than :03 remaining.
Although his team did win the game, LeGro was not pleased with his team’s
“Tonight’s game was very, very sloppy,” he told the team after the game. “Why? Because of your attitude during the week at practice. I want to see more from everyone, the starters, the scout team, the special teams. We should have won this game by more.”
Sierra Vista (1-1) visits Mark Keppel (0-3) next week, while Mountain View (2-1) hosts Pioneer.
“We have to show up to play next week against Keppel,” LeGro added. “I don’t care what their record is or who they played.”
