Fire Burns 125 Acres Above Glendora; Mandatory Evacuations Underway

An emergency shelter has been set up at Goddard Middle School.

A fire has scorched about 125 acres Thursday morning in the Angeles National Forest north of Glendora, prompting some mandatory evacuations from Colby to the Azusa city limits, according to fire authorities and a report from NBC.

The fire was reported shortly before 6 a.m. near San Gabriel Canyon Road, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported. Three helicopters were sent to the scene, along with firefighting ground crews.

Shortly after 7 a.m., evacuations were ordered for an area north of Sierra Madre Avenue, from Grand Avenue to Glendora Mountain Road, according to the Glendora Police Department. NBC reported mandatory evacuations are underway from Colby to the Azusa city limits.

An emergency shelter has been set up at Goddard Middle School, 859 E. Sierra Madre Ave. School is closed for the day, according to a broadcast report from NBC.

Glendora Mountain Road was closed, and traffic was slowing on the Foothill (210) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Citrus College sent an automated phone recording to area residents announcing the school is closed today.

Covina Police, Azusa Police and Sierra Madre Police are assisting Glendora Police and fire officials at the scene.

The fire appears to be moving southwest, said Glendora Police.
