Driver Arrested in Connection with Hit and Run in El Monte

A female crossing guard was struck at the intersection of Fineview Street and Durfee Avenue. Miguel Nevarez Jr. has been arrested.

A 44-year-old motorist suspected of hitting and seriously injuring a 51-year-old crossing guard and then leaving the scene was facing possible felony charges Thursday, authorities said.

The woman was struck at the intersection of Fineview Street and Durfee Avenue around 10 a.m. Tuesday, said Detective Ken Fraser of the El Monte Police Department. She was taken to County-USC Medical Center, he said.

The victim, identified by KCAL9 as Maitee Estrada, was thrown about 70 feet, her daughter told the station. Estrada was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, the station reported.

Estrada, who has worked as a crossing guard for about eight years, pushed a young boy out of harm's way before she was struck, said her daughter, Illiana Torres.

Around noon Tuesday, detectives arrested Miguel Nevarez Jr. of South El Monte and impounded a black 2002 GMC pickup truck as evidence, police said, reporting that witness information led to the arrest.
