El Monte Man Convicted of Child Sex Abuse Charges

Roberto Edgar Torres, a 33-year-old man from El Monte was extradited last year from Mexico.

A 33-year-old man who was extradited last year from Mexico was convicted today of child sex abuse charges involving a girl and a boy.

The Pomona Superior Court jury deliberated less than a day before convicting Roberto Edgar Torres of El Monte of two counts each of unlawful sexual intercourse or sodomy with a child 10 or under and unlawful oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child 10 or under, along with one count each of committing a lewd act on a child under 14 and harmful matter sent with the intent of seducing a minor.

The crimes occurred between January 1997 and March 2009.

The girl was 7 years old at the time, and the boy -- now an adult -- was 7 or 8 years old, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Torres fled during the investigation by the Pomona Police Department and was arrested in September 2011 in Tamaulipas, Mexico. He was extradited to Los Angeles County in March 2012 to be prosecuted on the charges, which were filed in May 2009.

He is facing 80 years to life when he is sentenced May 28 by Judge Bruce Marrs.
