Former Irwindale Police Officer Sentenced

Dennis Alva was accused of stealing more than $200,000 from his father.

A former Irwindale police officer who stole $250,000 in cash from his 84-year-old father was sentenced today to one year in county jail and ordered to repay the money.

Dennis Alva, 47, was also sentenced to five years probation on the grand theft count to which he pleaded no contest. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ray G. Jurado dismissed two other counts -- burglary and theft from an elder or dependent adult.

Dressed in jeans and sneakers, Alva was taken out the side door of the courtroom to be transferred directly to jail.

Based on recent data on jail overcrowding and the fact that Alva pleaded to a non-violent, non-sexual felony offense,  he will likely serve about 10 to 20 percent of his actual sentence.

He took the quarter-million dollars from his father's garage, where the older man had hidden it away.
