A La Puente man died Monday evening after he struck a mailbox while riding his bike, according to the California Highway Patrol office in Baldwin Park.

Luis Esparza, 47, was riding his bicycle at 6:30 p.m. eastbound on the north sidewalk in the 14000 block of Don Julian Road at an undetermined speed.   For an unknown reason, Esparza struck a raised metal mailbox, lost control of the bike, and rose off the curb, according to the Baldwin Park CHP.

The La Puente man was ejected from the bicycle onto the pavement and slid forward, hitting his head on the raised curb.  He was not wearing a helmet.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and pronounced Esparza dead on the scene.

Family members were notified and responded to the scene.
