A 28-year-old man fell or jumped out the back door of a sport utility vehicle going about 65 mph on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway, and died after he hit the pavement, the California Highway Patrol in Baldwin Park said Sunday.

Drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the death of Javier Gonzalez, a resident of Ontario, according to a CHP report.

The incident occurred in the left lane of the freeway just east of Via Verde Street at about 4 p.m. Saturday, according to the CHP.

Gonzalez was riding in a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by an aunt when he opened a rear door and fell or jumped out "for unknown reasons,'' the CHP said.

Gonzalez was declared dead at County-USC Medical Center.

Authorities ask that witnesses to the event call the CHP office in Baldwin Park at 626-338-1164.
