The man was shot around on August 1 outside K&B Liquor and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A 41-year-old man who was shot and killed during an altercation in a liquor store parking lot in La Puente was identified Friday.

Jose Garcia was shot around 9:30 p.m. on August 1 outside K&B Liquor at 443 Azusa Avenue and was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and a coroner's investigator.

"Witnesses told detectives the victim and the suspect were involved in a verbal argument in the parking lot, which escalated to a physical altercation,'' said Deputy Kim Manatt of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

"During the fight, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the victim multiple times.''

A white Chevrolet pickup truck with its door open could be seen in the parking lot after the shooting. On the ground next to it were two bullet casings and, near the tailgate, clothing and a pair of men's dress shoes.

The suspect was described as Hispanic, between 35 and 40 years old, with short hair, wearing a gray shirt and dark pants. Witnesses said he ran away.
