An allegedly DUI motorist suffered major injuries Sunday when his pickup truck slammed into a car carrier big rig on the Orange (57) Freeway shoulder in San Dimas, also causing a 60-gallon diesel fuel spill.
According to the CHP, the crash near Via Verde was reported at 3:36 a.m.
The pickup's driver was allegedly impaired by drugs or alcohol and was cited at the hospital.
Jonathan Chafino, 23, of Pomona, was traveling north on the 57 when the pickup veered onto the shoulder and struck the big rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Cheyenne Quesada told Patch.
The pickup overturned and ended up on its roof, sliding into a middle lane, according to the CHP.
A sedan traveling in that middle lane then slammed into the pickup but the car's driver was not injured, Quesada said.
Multiple lanes were closed for a time and a SigAlert was issued until about 10:30 a.m. for the spill cleanup, Quesada told Patch.
The big rig -- loaded with nine vehicles -- needed a flatbed tow truck to get it out of there.
