Baldwin Park Wrestling Coach Pleads Innocent to Sex Charges

Herbert Daniel Ortiz, 29, of Baldwin Park, was returned from Mexico to stand trial in connection with charges that he sexually molested two boys.

Updated 2:00 p.m. Herbert Daniel Ortiz, a wrestling coach from Baldwin Park pleaded not guilty on Thursday in connection with charges that he sexually molested two boys.

According to Sandi Gibbons, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney, Ortiz Monroy will have to appear in court again next February 22nd.

Herbert Daniel Ortiz, 29, also known as Herbert Ortizmonroy, is charged with four counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child, according to a Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokeswoman.

He is actually behind bars at Pitchess Detention Center, in Castaic, in lieu of $1 million bail, according to court records.

Ortiz allegedly molested a 14-year-old boy, according to authorities.

The alleged victim was reportedly befriended by Ortiz, who was an assistant wrestling coach at Rosemead High School from 2007 to 2009 and has been an instructor for the Bad News Panthers Children Wrestling Club since 2010, Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said.

The alleged victim's mother said she had been alerted to a YouTube video made by another boy saying he had been victimized by the suspect. He warned other parents to protect their children.

The mother recognized the suspect, asked her son if he had been a victim and the boy said he was, Parker said.

The crimes occurred in Rosemead, El Monte and Baldwin Park, Parker said.
