Abused Kitten at Baldwin Park Shelter Needs Home

An 18-year-old man was arrested by the deputies on felony animal cruelty charges.

Los Angeles County authorities sought a home Wednesday for an 8-month-old kitten that was repeatedly abused and fed only table scraps.

The kitten came to the attention of authorities after sheriff's deputies were sent to a home in the 17000 block of Main Street in La Puente last week to investigate a disturbance call, said Evelina Villa of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.

Authorities said the tabby's 18-year-old male owner hit her whenever he had a disagreement with his mother, which happened almost daily.

The kitten had been punched, slammed against the walls and thrown across the room, said Marcia Mayeda, director of the county animal agency. Lily still walks with a limp due to an injury to a rear leg.

The kitten "had swelling in her face and eye socket area, but that has gone down. We're trying to raise some funds to take care of some needed dental work—a result of the abuse she's endured. She is under the care of our veterinary staff and doing well," Mayeda said.

Staff of the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center named the kitten Butterfly Lily. Anyone interested in adopting Lily should call Sgt. Luis Villegas at the Baldwin Park facility at 626-430-2362.

Said Mayeda: "We will have to do a home check and require a commitment to raise Lily as an indoor-only cat when we find her new family.''

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested by the deputies on felony animal cruelty charges.

"We applaud the District Attorney's Office for prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law,'' Mayeda said.
