Baldwin Park to Lead Regional Plan for Bicycle Routes

The plan would connect the cities of Baldwin Park, El Monte, South El Monte and Monterrey Park.

Four San Gabriel Valley cities will start a historic regional effort to obtain a state grant in order to build more bicycle routes in Baldwin Park, Monterey Park, El Monte and South El Monte, The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

This new plan, rounds out efforts made by the city,

According to statements by Salvador López, Associate Planner for the City, at least $200 thousand dollars are available through a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) grant to carry out the plan.

The City took the initiative for this project when the 2010 census found that Baldwin Park was near the top of a list of 88 county cities in which residents used bicycles to get to work, according to the Tribune.

In Baldwin Park close to 1,100 residents use their bicycle to get to work only behind Pasadena and Santa Mónica.

Other cities such as Manhattan Beach, Torrance, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Gardena, Hermosa Beach y Lawndale have received grants in the past for up to $240 thousand dollars when a regional plan was presented.

López told the Tribune that the City’s master plan will include a bicycle lane that will go through the Big Dalton Wash, from the northeastern part of the city all the way to the bicycle lanes near Valley Boulevard.
