Boxing Gym Advocate Plans Fourth Straight Council Meeting Appearance

An advocate for increasing funding for a city boxing program says he and others will be speaking during the public comment session at tonight's City Council meeting, the fourth straight meeting at which the issue would be discussed.

Baldwin Park resident and one-time boxer Paul Cook was one member of a large group of people who have participated in the program who showed up to the June 19 meeting to protest cuts in funding that have reduced the boxing gym down to just operating Monday to Wednesday.

At its peak, the gym was open six days a week, according to the advocates.

City officials at the June 19 meeting said the cuts were part of reductions made across the board to recreation programs in the city.  The city did respond to the June 19 meeting by opening the gym for three hours on Thursdays, but cut Monday to Wednesday operating times by one hour to compensate.

Cook has been blogging about the issue on his own website since.

The audio from the 30 minutes of public comment and City Council response can be listened to above - it starts at about 25 minutes into the recording.
