City: Cut Police Department or Raise Taxes

A city document on Baldwin Park's financial future that will be heard at Wednesday's City Council meeting states that the city needs to either shut down its Police Department and contract with the County Sheriff's Department or raise taxes.

The city's budget and financial future planning documents notes that the city is facing an annual deficit of $3 million to $4.9 million for the next 10 years and says the city has "limited options" for what to do about it.  The documents then lists the two above options as the only ones the city has.

If the city was to levy a parcel tax on each household in the city, it would need about $290 per parcel, according to the documents.

As noted on Friday, the the city recently posted its 2013-14 budget estimate online

The document shows the city is projecting to run a general fund deficit of just over $3.6 million for the year, bringing the city's reserve funds down below $1 million.

The city has yet to pass the budget and will start hearings as soon as September 25, according to city documents.
