School District Launches Campaign To Improve Attendance

If the goal of increasing attendance by 1.5% is met, the District could receive an additional $1 million from the State of California.

The school year started Monday for all students of the , and with it, a campaign that aims to improve attendance in order to secure more funds from the State.

The "On Time, In Class, Every Day!" campaign asks the community to join in the simple act of having children attend school daily.

“During these financially difficult times, we are often asked by parents, ‘How can I help’, here is one way that doesn’t cost any money and benefits
students,” said Superintendent Mark Skvarna in a letter published in the District's website.

Currently, the Average Daily Attendance (ADA) in Baldwin Park is 96%. BPUSD's goal is to reach 97.5%. According to Svarna, an increase of 1.5% would mean an additional $1 million in funds for the district.

Svarna also explained that the school district receives a full day’s revenue even if a student is present only a portion of the day. A school does not receive funding for any full-day’s absence, excused or unexcused.

"We understand that, on occasion, families need to take their children to doctor’s appointments or on family trips, but it would be helpful if families schedule these events outside of the school day or so the student could attend class for a portion of the day.” said Svarna.
