Telescope Dome For Mt. SAC Observatory Mounted

The 23-foot, 3,000-pound aluminum dome will house a 16-inch telescope atop the Walnut campus' science building.

The science building at Mount San Antonio College -- which serves Baldwin Park residents -- got a new piece of architecture this week: a huge dome meant to house a large telescope for the Astronomy Department.

The dome and telescope will be an addition to the school's planetarium and its astronomy program, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

A project that has taken five years to reach fruition, the observatory will not be on line before the latter part of January, school staff told SGVTribune.com.

Sightings taken on the telescope will be streamed directly into classrooms, the news site reported.

Not just for the students, however, the observatory will also be opened to the public for viewings, officials told the news agency.
